How to Keep Your Sofa Looking Schplendid - A Guide to Regular Sofa Care

Simple habits that make beautiful sofas last for generations...

A Schplendid sofa doesn’t need mollycoddling, but a little regular affection goes a long way. Think of it as the sofa equivalent of brushing your teeth – necessary if you want to be at your best, but also quick, easy, and ultimately satisfying.

We build our sofas to last a lifetime (two, probably). The materials – down, beech, linen, coconut and wool – are as natural as they come. They breathe, soften and mature, just like good leather shoes or solid wood furniture.

Here’s how to keep yours looking, well… Schplendid.

The weekly ritual

A ten-minute routine that will keep everything in beautiful order.

  • Brush or vacuum gently. Use a soft brush attachment to remove dust, crumbs and general family life.

  • Rotate the cushions. Give them a little shuffle so they wear evenly.

  • Quick plump check. Side and back cushions may appreciate a pat or two — see our Plumping Guide if you haven’t yet joined the Worshipful Company of Plumpers.

It’s not a military inspection, just a friendly once-over.

The six-monthly spruce-up

Twice a year, when you’re feeling virtuous (or when guests are due):

  • Remove cushions and vacuum underneath. (You’ll find things. You may not wish to identify them.)

  • Try the viral saucepan-lid trick – with thanks to the cleaning geniuses at Purdy & Figg.
Wrap a clean microfibre cloth around a saucepan lid and sweep it across your upholstery. It lifts dust, revives the nap and is oddly satisfying to watch.

  • Velvet owners: brush or steam lightly to lift the pile.

  • Check your feet. Our beechwood frames are built for life, but a quick periodic leg-tightening keeps everything shipshape.

The golden rules (a.k.a. the Sofa Commandments)

  1. Thou shalt not park thy sofa in full sun.
Even the finest linen will fade under interrogation-level rays.

  2. Nor shalt thou placet on a damp floor.
The beech hardwood within may not appreciate moisture.

  3. Thou mayest eat crisps upon it, but not tikka masala.
Stains are a sin against comfort.

  4. And thou shalt plump regularly, amen.
It is the path to everlasting fluffiness.

Why it matters

Our linens and velvets aren’t sprayed with chemical stain-guards or plastic coatings. They’re stone-washed, 100% natural and gloriously tactile. That’s why they feel so good – and why they deserve a little care.

A few minutes here and there is all it takes to keep your sofa radiant. Think of it as investing time in something you love: less ‘housework,’ more devotion to craftsmanship.

The Schplendid philosophy

Good materials age beautifully, especially if you look after them. Show your sofa a bit of love now and then, and it will reward you for decades.

The result? A sofa that looks better at ten years old than most do at two. And that is what we call... Schplendid.
