A sofa can seem like a very ordinary thing – until you need one and do not have one.
Women and children escaping domestic abuse are often placed in social housing that is completely empty. A new home may offer safety and a fresh start, but without beds, tables, chairs or somewhere comfortable to sit, it can be very difficult for it to feel like a home.
Furnishing Futures works with the interiors industry to change that. The charity takes high-quality furniture and homewares donated by brands and uses them to create welcoming, thoughtfully furnished homes for survivors of domestic abuse.
Furnishing Futures was founded by Emily Wheeler, a registered social worker with more than twenty years’ frontline experience, who is also a trained interior designer and interiors writer. That combination sits at the heart of the charity’s work: an understanding that a safe, comfortable and thoughtfully furnished home can play a real part in helping people recover and rebuild.

It is an admirably practical idea. Furniture that might otherwise go unused or end up in landfill is given a meaningful new life, while families are offered some of the comfort and dignity that every home should provide.
Schplendid is now very pleased to be one of a number of furniture and interiors brands supporting its work. As part of the partnership, we’ll be donating sofas regularly for the homes Furnishing Futures creates.
