Why we don’t use dacron in our sofas (and why everyone else does)

Most sofas are padded out with a plastic called dacron. Here’s what it really is, and why we don’t go anywhere near it…
The bit of the sofa no one shows you
Lift the skin of almost any modern sofa and you’ll find a thin, fluffy, white layer wrapped around everything like a synthetic duvet. It sits just beneath the fabric, softening edges and bulking out cushions. That material is called dacron.
It appears in the vast majority of sofas made today, from the high street up through much of the so-called premium market. And despite how ubiquitous it is, very few people know what it actually is, or why it’s there in the first place.
We don’t use it at all.
What is dacron, exactly?
The word ‘dacron’ has a slightly reassuring ring to it, as though it might be something technical, or even advanced. In reality, it is simply a trade name for a form of polyester fibre – in other words, plastic.
More specifically, it is made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a petrochemical polymer derived from oil. The same base material is used to make plastic drinks bottles, food packaging and a great deal of synthetic clothing.
In the case of dacron, the polymer is melted down, extruded into fine filaments, and then crimped and bonded into a light, airy sheet.
That sheet is then wrapped around foam cushions or stretched across the internal surfaces of a sofa. Its role is modest but useful from a manufacturing point of view: it softens the feel of firmer materials, smooths out edges, and gives a slightly fuller, more inviting appearance when the sofa is new.
There is nothing especially sophisticated about it, and nothing structural. It doesn’t support the body in any meaningful way, nor does it meaningfully improve the long-term performance of the piece. It is, essentially, a layer of synthetic padding designed to make everything look and feel a little better at first contact.
Why the entire industry uses it
From the perspective of a modern furniture manufacturer, dacron solves several problems at once.
First, it is extraordinarily cheap. As Rohan says, it costs “about 1p per metre… it’s almost free.” In an industry that is relentlessly driven by cost control, that alone would be enough to secure its place.
But it is also quick and forgiving to work with. It can be applied rapidly, requires very little skill, and produces an immediate visual and tactile effect. A sofa that might otherwise feel slightly firm or angular can, with a thin wrap of dacron, be made to feel softer, fuller and more “finished” in the showroom.
Perhaps most importantly, it helps disguise what lies beneath. Lower-cost foams and simpler constructions can be made to appear more generous than they really are, at least in the early stages of a product’s life.
For a system geared towards speed and price-point manufacturing, dacron is pretty much ideal.
The problem with dacron
The difficulty is that most of these advantages are short-lived, and largely cosmetic.
1. It doesn’t breathe
Because dacron is a synthetic fibre, it does not breathe in the way natural materials do. Air does not move through it particularly well, and it does nothing to regulate temperature.
The result is a seating surface that can feel slightly inert: warm when the room is warm, and offering little comfort when it is cold.
2. It flattens (quickly)
Dacron has very limited resilience. The initial softness and plumpness it provides are largely the result of trapped air within the fibre structure, and that structure compresses with use.
Over time, the material flattens and loses its loft, and unlike better natural fibres, it does not recover in any meaningful way.
This is why so many modern sofas feel noticeably different after a year or two. The surface becomes thinner and less forgiving, the initial sense of generosity fades, and what remains is closer to the underlying foam than the inviting object first encountered in the showroom.
3. It adds nothing of substance
Dacron isn’t doing any real work in terms of supporting your body, or enhancing comfort and improving the longevity of the sofa. It’s just… padding. It creates the outline of a sofa design that looks good in the showroom, but has no real substance.
Beyond performance, there is also the question of what it is. Dacron is derived from fossil fuels, and it does not biodegrade. When a sofa reaches the end of its life – which, in many cases, is far sooner than it should be – that layer of plastic remains part of the waste stream, along with the foams and other synthetic components around it.
In that sense, it is not just a minor internal detail, but part of a much broader pattern in how furniture is made today.
What we use instead
We use pure wool – simple as that.
We don’t blend it into something else – we use it as a proper upholstery material in its own right. There are very good practical as well as ethical and philosophical reasons why.

Why wool is different
Wool is one of those glorious miracles of nature whose qualities become more impressive the closer you look.
Each fibre has a natural crimp, forming a kind of microscopic spring. This gives it resilience and loft, allowing it to compress under pressure and then return to its original form. At the same time, the structure of the fibre allows air to circulate freely, which is what gives wool its remarkable ability to regulate temperature.
In practice, that means a sofa that feels comfortable in all conditions…. It doesn’t trap heat in the same way synthetic fibres do, nor does it feel cold or unyielding. Instead, it adjusts subtly, holding warmth when it is needed and releasing it when it is not.
There is also a tactility to wool that is difficult to replicate artificially. It has a softness that comes from the fibre itself, along with the presence of lanolin, a natural wax that contributes to durability and a certain richness of feel. You don’t need to artificially add anything to it.
The real difference
At first glance, this might seem like a small detail: a thin internal layer that most people will never see. However, it speaks to a much larger philosophy, and what makes Schplendid different in terms of approach.
One approach begins with the question: what is the most efficient way to produce something that looks and feels good at the point of sale?
The other, more Schplendid way, asks: what materials will continue to perform, and continue to feel good, over many years of use?
The choice between dacron and wool sits squarely within that distinction.
