Why deckchair stripes work indoors

Why deckchair stripes work indoors

A good stripe can bring that timeless British seaside feeling into a room – in the best possible way...

There is a dangerous way to do seaside or coastal interiors (anchor cushions and rope mirrors anyone?), but the loveliest seaside references are much more subtle. You might say they remember the coast rather than depict it.

A deckchair stripe does this rather brilliantly… it carries that feel of fresh air, faded canvas, holiday weather, ice creams, windbreaks, sandy sandwiches, lovely sea air deep sleeps.

This is surely a reason why stripes have such a cheerful feeling in British homes. For generations, they were part of the seaside landscape: deckchairs, beach huts, awnings, bathing tents and pier canopies. Wide stripes, narrow stripes, reds, blues, pinks and greens, all softened by sun, salt and weather.

Weathering is a big part of it. Bright red can be a bit much in a sitting room, but rhubarb is much easier. Sugary pink is ok in the right circs, but a faded rose is warmer and more grown-up.

The colours of old seaside canvas have already been softened for us by years of use and weather and memory. That is the feeling behind the Rhubarb & Rose Pembroke Stripe by Piglet in Bed. It has the spirit of a vintage deckchair, but not in a novelty way.

Reimagined as a heavyweight natural linen for Schplendid sofas, the stripe comes indoors very happily.

One more thing to note: the original deckchair was not, if we are being honest, the most comfortable object ever invented. Now it gets proper springs, natural layers and a sofa worth spending time on. That seems rather Schplendid.
