Will I Regret a Striped Sofa?

Will I Regret a Striped Sofa?

The fear is understandable. But with the right stripe, and the right sofa underneath it, there is much less to worry about...

A common worry when buying interesting furniture is: what if I love it now and hate it later? People tend to retreat to plainness because, even if they don’t love it, it’s not likely to ever become offensive.

A striped sofa might sound like the sort of thing you should be nervous about. But in practice, it is actually one of the safer ways to bring pattern into a room. Stripes have order and simplicity, and  they’ve never been out of style.  Ticking stripes, deckchair stripes, awning stripes and simple woven stripes have been around for hundreds of years. They are not a sudden trend.

But there is another reason to be braver with a Schplendid sofa.

Most modern sofas are not really made with a second or third life in mind. By the time you tire of the cover, the frame, foam and fillings may already be on the way out too. So the fabric choice can feel horribly final: choose the wrong thing and you are stuck with it until the whole sofa gives up.

A Schplendid sofa is a different proposition. The important bit (the frame, springs, natural layers and comfort) is built for the long haul. Many of our sofas have removable covers, and in any case a properly made sofa can be re-covered.

So the fabric is not the whole sofa. It is the sofa’s current outfit. That makes choosing something with character much less frightening. If, years from now, you decide the room wants something calmer, darker, lighter, plainer or even stripey in a completely different way, the sofa can change with you.

Not that we think anyone will tire of the Rhubarb & Rose Pembroke Stripe by Piglet in Bed. We're not silly.
