Spring Cleaning Checklist – How to refresh your sofa and living room this season

Hooray, it’s spring cleaning time! Love it or loathe it, a good spring clean does make a real difference to how you feel about your home. Here’s a checklist for an effective refresh – with some particular attention paid to the sofa…

Spring is when we get the urge to clear out winter clutter, blitz the cupboards and corners, and generally create a lighter, more inviting living space. And while the sofa isn’t always top of the spring-cleaning masterplan, it probably should be.

As the most visible and most-used part of the living room, giving your sofa a proper spring refresh can instantly lift the whole space.

Here’s how to tackle it sensibly.

Spring Cleaning Sofa and Living Room Checklist

1. Make a spring cleaning plan

A successful spring clean starts with a plan. Creating one stops the whole thing becoming horribly overwhelming – and makes it much more likely you’ll actually finish it.

Rather than tackling everything at once, break tasks down by room and spread them over a few days. Start with high-traffic areas like the living room, where small changes are immediately noticeable. Early wins are surprisingly motivating when you’re staring down cupboards you’ve been ignoring since November.

2. Attack the clutter first (the low hanging fruit)

Before you get anywhere near cleaning products, have a proper crack at the clutter.

Remove excess cushions, throws, magazines, pens, bowls, half-burnt candles and all the other odds and ends that have quietly accumulated over winter. A clutter-free living room not only looks better, it makes cleaning much quicker and easier.

If something no longer serves a purpose or adds comfort, it may be time to let it go. Unleash your inner Marie Kondo (gently).

3. Refresh your sofa: a simple spring-cleaning method

As the most used piece of furniture in your home, your sofa deserves a bit of focused care – and spring is a natural time to give it some extra attention.

The basics
  • Air it out Open the windows to remove trapped odours and refresh the fabric.

  • Vacuum thoroughly get into seams and crevices and underneath cushions.
Velvet owners: brush gently or use light steam to lift the pile.

  • The saucepan-lid trick with thanks to the cleaning geniuses at Purdy & Figg: wrap a clean microfibre cloth around a saucepan lid and sweep it across the upholstery. It lifts dust, revives the nap and is oddly satisfying to watch.

  • Plump and rotate cushions this helps maintain both shape and comfort.

4. Finish the living room properly

A proper spring clean goes beyond the obvious surfaces. Once the sofa’s done, it’s worth finishing the room so everything feels genuinely refreshed.

  • Clean skirting boards and door handles

  • Wipe light switches and remote controls

  • Vacuum behind and underneath furniture

  • Swap heavier winter throws for lighter, spring-ready textures

These small details can make a serious difference in things feeling lighter and cleaner.

Keeping things fresh all year round

Keeping your sofa (and living room) in good shape doesn’t require heroic effort. Regular vacuuming, rotating cushions and airing fabrics will all help extend the life of your sofa and keep it comfortable.

A few small habits, done little and often, make a big difference.
